One Semester Course - Etiquette for Teens, Color and Design, Sewing Machine project, Foods and Nutrition, Food Safety, Human Development

Foreign Language

One Semester of Spanish or German is offered.  Topics covered include description, numbers, clothing, sports, school, time, dates, family, body parts, pronouns, present tense verbs, adjective endings and the "to like" constructions.  Cultural units that focus on the target countries include holidays, the school system, young people, homes and customs, as well as the German and Hispanic presence and influence in the United States.

Wellness

Health Units: First Aid, Mental Health, FITT Performance, Relationships/STDS, DARE

Gym Units: Fast pitch/Flag Football, Fitness Info. Fitness Testing, Recreational Games, Team Handball/Weight Training, Golf/Archery, Volleyball, Jitterbug/Bowling, Frisbee Golf, Bike 

Visual Arts

General Music

Study of basic theory continued; Contemporary music and composers; Guitars, both chords and single note melodies; “The Sound of Music” (this is an interdisciplinary unit tie-in with 8th rade core on Nazi Germany/WWII)/musical; Listening Journals to experience music of various genres and culture.

Special Education

Special Education teachers determine the curriculum for classes primarily from IEP goals and objectives.  The State content standards, in which the Brookings School District has adopted as their curriculum, are used as a guide for special education classes.  Students with special education needs are served in either an Inclusion classroom, resource room setting or in a life skills classroom.

Band

The students in band work on general tone production, technique, rhythms, scales, range, theory, posture, expression and etiquette.

Orchestra

String orchestra is offered to study classical music history, and string performance.  Students are instructed to develop good pitch sense, bowing techniques and a variety of scales and etudes.  Performances include major concerts and festival participation.

Chorus

Reinforce/Extend study of:  Vocal/Sound production, Singing in a different language or style, Theory, Elements of music - melody, harmony, rhythm, tone, color, and form.

Keyboarding/Computer

The student will:  Reinforce keyboarding skills via daily assignments with warm-ups.  Achieve a 35 wpm speed for typing.  Produce various reports including unbound and bound reports with references and bibliography.  Learn to use headers/footers, page numbers, inserted dates, and hanging indent in reports.  Learn symbols and borders.  Learn more about the drawing toolbar.  Explore basic Excel spreadsheets, tables and charts with simple formulas through a variety of integrated curriculum projects.  Create business letters with letterhead.
